My experience and feelings of learning Chinese at IMCPI-Winston

I’m Winston, from London. I have been in Shanghai for over 6 years and been studying Chinese at IMCPI since last July. I really want to continue my lessons with IMCPI. The main reason is that I love the school & people here. I’m satisfied with content quality and teachers, and they provide good customer service, and try to meet learners’ needs. I'd like to share some of my experiences and feelings with this article.

My teacher always prepares a PowerPoint with extra material related to the topic. Which means she cares about a class( or her student) in advance. All the talks are very natural and helps me to adopt to Chinese rhythm and learn extra words.

For me, the most difficult part in learning Chinese is the tones. My teacher will correct me if I'm wrong. Sometimes maybe she does it very delicately, but one day the teacher told me that in traditional Chinese culture, people mistakes make you better. She said that I shouldn’t be shy, actually I should try to learn more from those mistakes. The teachers here always try their best to help to your Chinese learning! My teacher Lilian is really excellent!

During my trail classes, some teachers wanted to talk in English far from the content. I would advise some teachers less English speaking and forth a student to understand Chinese. Only when a student is really struggling to get something. Otherwise everything is great.

Back to my Chinese learning, I review the words or sentence which I learned during the class, it's a good habit. I believe that the best way to learn properly is to review right after class to catch up every extra information teacher gives. Maybe once a week I can go through vocabulary and texts.

So far, sometimes it's difficult to use Chinese in daily life. Difficult to speak out, but easier to understand. That's the most difficult part for me now. It's easy to lose motivation because the results don't show up fast like with other languages. But it needs our patience. Take your time, guys.

Actually, I never gave up my learning in IMCPI Chinese! I think a foreign student might give up Chinese if does not see a progress in learning, which could happen for two reasons : not reviewing and using in daily life, like no free time or need or because of not motivated and not enthusiastic teacher.

Now I have enough Chinese proficiency and ability, which can help me to live and work here, Shanghai, a magical city. I’ll live in Shanghai for long term I think. And that's the main reason WHY I learn Chinese.

These are my experience and feelings of learning Chinese at IMCPI.
